Ultimate-1
The heavy-duty frame employs three-inch diameter steel support posts, which may be filled with sand or lead shot to provide maximum reactive mass. The high mass of the frame system insures that all of the energy of powerful bass demands is converted to music, giving the tightest, fastest bass possible. The termination of the front and rear support posts taper to a point to provide optimum floor coupling.
The standard finish of the frame is a catalyzed paint that provides a beautiful lustrous black finish. Other colors may be selected. Black Spandex grille cloth is standard, giving maximum acoustical openness. The interface electronics uses premium hookup wire and is the first to employ toroidal audio transformers.
The membrane is the thinnest, lowest mass film commercially available, assuring large, powerful linear membrane excursions and silky-smooth extended highs. The internal structure of the electrostatic panel is constructed of laser-cut high density plastic for the ultimate in dimensional accuracy and environmental stability.
Generally, the philosophy of a manufacturer of high-end products is to provide a product that will satisfy the majority of its customers. However, for the few customers who cannot betray their personal desires at any cost, a different approach must be taken. Since the inception of Sound Lab in 1978, we have continually made improvements.
Many of these have been prompted by the customers, themselves. Some of the suggestions have been of a nature that would not appeal to the majority. Nevertheless, for those few who must "go all the way" we have devised the Ultimate series.
The customer is invited to assist in choosing some of the critical parts, such as the type of internal conductors and speaker posts. The color of the framework and the type of grille treatment are other areas in which the customer may participate. In other words, the Ultimate is a specialized, customized product that bears the trademark of the owner.

Audiophile-1
|
"The A-1 is about elevating reproduced music to the level of the live experience, . . . That they succeed to this extent is a miracle that every audiophile should experience at least once in his or her lifetime, . . . they’ve got me excited about music like never before. The A-1 was capable of sketching the outlines of a piano or chorus with lifelike dimensions that had me hooked like never before, . . . I was captivated by the sensation of having my favorite singers standing before me as if in the flesh. The realism of the height perspective made me want to run right up to these phantoms and hug them out of sheer joy."
Dick Olsher - Stereophile - Vol 15 No. 11 |
"The awesome performance of the A-1 has become a legend, and will forever change the way you hear reproduced sound. The A-1 stands at the forefront of loudspeaker design. There has never been a single membrane loudspeaker that reproduces the audio spectrum as faithfully as the A-1."
Perfectionists and reviewers have acclaimed the naturalness and ease with which it represents music in all of its forms. There is an addiction to the A-1 such that, upon auditioning it, you will never view music reproduction as before. This is the last speaker that you will ever buy.

Millennium-1
The magic moment has arrived. The music source has been queued and you are expectantly awaiting the first sounds to emerge from your Millennium-1 loudspeakers. With liquid ease music fills the listening room with a naturalness that challenges the live performance.
Hour after hour of listening to your favorite music you find the Millennium-1 transducers preserving the initial rush of ecstasy that you first experienced.
Technically speaking, what makes this experience possible? In part, it is due to the super-low mass of the membrane coupled with an iso-phasically applied driving force that evenly and uniformly moves every square inch of the membrane at the same time.
Furthermore, there is only one transducing surface encompassing the entire audio spectrum, preserving the critical temporal relationships of the original music.
More could be said about distributed resonance for enhancing bass response, the pure-copper charge diffusion ring for a more uniform charge distribution and faster charging, the optional toroidal audio transformers for superior acoustic resolution, the wide spectrally-uniform energy dispersion and many more technical advances that are only found in Sound Lab electrostatic transducers.
We invite you to visit your local Sound Lab dealer and audition the Millennium-1. You will never v iew music reproduction as before.

Millennium 2
The Millennium-2 is a truly full-range electrostatic loudspeaker. "So What?" you ask. What can a Millennium-2 do for me that other speakers can't do? This is a reasonable question when you are about to invest your money. It's our job to give a satisfactory answer. Perhaps, the most effective approach is to mention what reactions others have had to the Millennium-2.
After listening to them, some have used objectives like: clean, crisp, undistorted, excellent imaging, very life-like, etc. Perhaps, the best summary was given by a well-known reviewer: "Never in my life have I lived with a speaker that has brought, and continues to bring, as much pleasure, excitement and satisfaction. In short, I am madly, passionately in love with their sound".
What would cause listeners to make such glowing remarks? Technically speaking, the answer is simple. In part, it is due to the super-low mass of the membrane coupled with an iso-phasically applied driving force that evenly and uniformly moves every square inch of the membrane at the same time.
Furthermore, there is only one transducing surface encomp assing the entire audio spectrum, preserving the critical temporal relationships of the original music.

Renaissance-3
The Renaissance-3 (R-3) loudspeaker is a premium electrostatic panel that provides the ultimate in versatility and small panel performance. The mission of the R-3 is to provide the finest acoustical reproduction from the lower mid-range to the highest audio frequencies.
A single piece-wise curved membrane provides a cohesive sound source that is free from the anomalies created by the use of multiple drivers. Dispersion is an amazing seamless 90 degrees in the horizontal plane, making the entire listening room the "sweet spot".
What's more, the R-3 has a higher efficiency than is normally expected from an electrostatic speaker, making possible the use of lower-powered amplifiers.
The R-3 has four controls to equalize and optimize sound reproduction: one control permits a choice of four gain positions, a second control permits a choice of four low-frequency cutoff frequencies.
These two controls make possible a critical match to a variety of sub-woofers. A third control, brilliance, permits adjustment of the high-frequency balance. Finally, a fourth control, bias, allows optimal adjustment of efficiency.
The R-3 is not intended to reproduce the lower two octaves of the audio spectrum. The choice of a low-frequency tra nsducer system, or sub-woofer, is left open so that bass characteristics can be selected to meet the desired criteria of the application.
It has been our experience that some listeners prefer a fast articulate bass characteristic while others prefer a heavy, less defined characteristic.
The demands of serious music listeners tend to prefer the former while those having interest in the reproduction of explosive special-effect sounds of video tracks prefer the latter. Sound Lab offers an optional (soon to be released) sub-woofer, the Rennaisance-4.
The R-4 is designed to provide an excellent balance between these characteristics. If a sub-woofer is desired that can perform acceptably over a variety of situations, we recommend the R-4.
However, if the application requires fine-tuning for a specific application, then the appropriate bass unit can be independently selected.
If it is desired to employ a special-purpose sub-woofer, then just the R-3 is purchased, which has it's own free-standing base. When the R-4 is employed, it mounts to the lower back of the R-3, forming a monolithic structure. In this case, the free-standing base is not necessary and the R-3 is purchased without it.
The Renaissance-3 represents over a quarter of a century of electrostatic loudspeaker development. Nothing has been spared to provide the absolute finest in electrostati
c reproduction and application versatility.

Dynastat |
"The first impression I and many experienced visiting listeners have of the Dynastats is of sweet and natural mid-range and high frequency reproduction. The term transparency has been kicked around lately, and its definition debated, but whatever it exactly is the Dynastats have it in spades...'
'Dynamic woofer-electrostatic combinations using separate subwoofers are difficult to meld properly; the 'seam' between the drivers i s often all too audible. 'This is not particularly the case with the Dynastats... low bass output is quite good... dynamic range is also fine.' 'Imaging was excellent, with precise lateral localization and reasonable sense of stage depth...' 'The Dynastats provide an unmatched quota of naturally transparent sound for the money."
Glenn A. Hart - High Performance Review - April/June 1988 |
The Dynastat represents the finest electrostatic/dynamic hybrid available. A widely dispersing electrostatic tweeter generates silky smooth highs and mids, while the lower frequencies are produced by a high performance polypropylene 10.5" driver that is acoustically supported by a ported enclosure system.
The enclosure is constructed of high-density acoustical-grade particle board which is internally braced to provide the stiffness and mass necessary to prevent box colorations.
A unique continuously adjustable low frequency level control is provided that makes it easy to obtain optimum spectral balance in any acoustical environment.
The Dynastat is incomparable in high quality home theater systems as well as high-end audio systems. Furthermore, the Dynastat is efficient, plays effortlessly at realistic levels and has a sonic signature tha t is pure and natural.
Due to the wide smooth dispersion, the "sweet spot" encompasses the entire listening room.

Marquee
Home theater is exciting!
A truly high-end system creates a virtual reality that can fool the senses and compel the emotions to react as if you are a part of the performance. If you do not feel this transformation, then maybe your center channel speaker is inadequate.
The Marquee is a powerful answer to this need. It has the resolution, dynamic range, accuracy and bass response capable of reproducing the voice channel with life-like realism.
What's more, it has remarkably highefficiency. The Marquee is not just another center channel speaker. In fact, because of its compact size and surprising performance it just might become your favorite speaker.
Technically, the exceptional performance of the Marquee is due to four important sub-systems, the enclosure, tweeter, woofers, and the electronics. A unique slot-loaded dual-port enclosure system provides exceptional bass performance.
Bass peaks have astonishing visceral impact that is remarkable for such a small system. The mids and highs are reproduced by three electrostatic panels and the lower frequencies through two shielded woofers.
Thanks to the electrostatic panels, the mids and highs have a clarity and naturalness that can not be duplicated by any other type of transducer.
Furthermore, due to the stiff, low mass aluminum cones of the woofers, bass information has unprecedented resolution and smoothness. Only the finest components are incorporated into the electronics.
We invite you to listen to the Marquee. It represents a small investment and promises a large enhancement of the realism of your system.

Sallie |
"Reflection off the wedges is quite minimal; placements right up against the back of the speaker are okay, and will not color the front wave.
With Sallie ... the back wave really died.
The wedges are very effective in attenuating sound from 250 hz up.
I verified to my satisfaction that Sallie performed as effectively as a pair of ASC Studio Traps behind each speaker in controlling the A-1s back wave. I imagine that any dipole speaker would benefit from a date with Sallie."
Dick Olsher
Stereophile
|
Sallie is an acronym that stands for "Sonic Attenuator for Lower Levels of Interference Effects.
"The need for Sallie is due to the inherent nature of dipole loudspeakers, wherein equal energy emanates from both the front and back of the radiator. Deleterious effects can result from this phenomenon.
Reflected energy from objects and the wall behind the speaker can add to or subtract from the energy radiated by the membrane, thus affecting the sound.
The presence of the front wave and the reflected back wave can create interference effects that may cause frequency response anomalies. Sallie is an acoustical device that eliminates these problems by absorbing the exact degree of backwave energy necessary to eliminate audible room effects and restore pristine reproduction.
It has been found that a critical amount of backwave energy enhances the presence of the sound without causing negative effects. The amount of backwave energy released into the room is determined by the distance between the back of the speaker and Sallie. For a given room this distance is easily determined empirically.
Furthermore, Sallie can save the high expense of acoustically treating the back wall, with the resulting compromise of room decor. Sallie is hidden by the speaker and does not interfere with room aesthetics. Every dipole speaker and sound room can use Sallie.
